Health authorities generally recommend 8-ounce glasses, which equals to about 2 liters. This is called the 8×8 rule and is very easy to remember.

But The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends setting a bit higher volume of total daily water intake i.e. 3.7 liters (15.5 cups) for the average adult male and 2.7 liters (11.5 cups) for the average adult female.

Factors affecting water requirement:-

The need for water may increase or decrease depending upon certain factors as follows:-

  • Climatic conditions:- Body requires more fluid intake when you are in a hot or humid climate as the body sweats more in these conditions. Also, at a higher altitude, there may be increased urination so the body requires more fluid intake.

  • Illness:- Some illnesses like fever, vomiting, diarrhea can also cause high losses of fluids which may need high fluid replacement. Other conditions that also require high fluid intake are bladder infections and urinary tract stones. On the other hand, conditions such as heart failure, kidney, and liver disorders may require restrictions in fluid intake.

  • Exercise or Physical Activity:- If you are indulged in any physical activity which makes you sweat more than you should take in more fluids. You can drink water before, during, after exercise. In case you are if you are involved in intense exercise or exercise lasts more than an hour you need to take some sports to drink so as to replace the sodium lost by the body.

  • Pregnancy or Breast-Feeding:- Women who are pregnant or are breast-feeding need more fluids to keep their body hydrated. A pregnant woman needs 2.3litres of liquid and a breast-feeding woman needs 3.4litres approximately.
